Frequently Asked Questions About Rubber Matting
What is rubber matting used for?
Rubber matting is used in a wide range of applications across both domestic and commercial settings. Common uses include gym and fitness flooring, garage and workshop floors, horse stable flooring, playground safety surfaces, anti-fatigue matting in kitchens and factories, entrance matting for schools and offices, and outdoor pathways. Its non-slip, waterproof and shock-absorbing properties make it suitable for virtually any area where grip, durability and comfort underfoot are required.
How thick should rubber matting be?
The ideal thickness of rubber matting depends on the application. For light-duty use such as entrance mats or anti-fatigue matting, 6–10mm is typically sufficient. For gyms and fitness areas where weights are used, 15–20mm is recommended to absorb impact. Horse stable matting is usually 17–20mm thick to provide adequate cushioning for horses. For playgrounds and safety surfaces, thickness is determined by the Critical Fall Height (CFH) — generally 40mm or more for climbing frames up to 1m high. If you're unsure, our product descriptions include recommended thickness guidance for each application.
What is the best rubber matting for a garage?
The best rubber matting for a garage is a heavy-duty interlocking rubber tile or a rubber matting roll with a studded or coin-pattern surface. These provide excellent grip underfoot, resist oil and chemical spills, and are easy to cut to fit any garage layout. Our garage flooring range includes options from 6mm upward. For a standard domestic garage, a 10–15mm studded rubber mat or roll is ideal — durable enough for vehicle traffic and comfortable enough for DIY work.
Is rubber matting waterproof?
Yes, rubber matting is naturally waterproof and highly resistant to moisture. It will not absorb water, swell or degrade when exposed to rain, hosing down or wet environments. This makes it ideal for outdoor use, wet rooms, poolside areas, stable floors and food preparation areas. Most of our rubber matting products can be cleaned simply by hosing down or wiping with a damp cloth.
Can rubber matting be cut to size?
Yes — rubber matting rolls and tiles can be cut to size using a sharp utility knife and a straight edge. Rubber matting rolls are particularly flexible in this regard, as they can be trimmed to fit any room shape or dimension. If you need a custom size or are ordering in bulk, contact our team and we can advise on the best cutting approach for your specific thickness and grade.
How long does rubber matting last?
High-quality rubber matting is extremely durable and can last 10–20 years or more with normal use. The lifespan depends on the thickness, grade and intensity of use. Heavy-duty vulcanised rubber mats used in commercial kitchens or gyms will outlast cheaper foam alternatives significantly. Proper cleaning and occasional inspection for wear will help extend the life of your matting further.
Does rubber matting smell?
New rubber matting may have a mild rubber odour when first unrolled, which is completely normal and harmless. This smell typically dissipates within 24–72 hours of installation, especially in a well-ventilated area. If you are sensitive to smell, we recommend unrolling the matting outdoors or in an open space for 24 hours before fitting.
What thickness rubber matting do I need for a horse stable?
For horse stables, we recommend a minimum of 17mm thick rubber stable matting. This provides adequate cushioning for the horse to lie down comfortably, reduces the amount of bedding required, and protects the horse's joints and hooves. Our horse mats are available in 17mm and 20mm thicknesses, manufactured from dense recycled rubber for maximum durability and easy cleaning.
