16mm or 23mm Rubber Grass Mats?

  • 16mm rubber grass mats – lighter and easier to handle; ideal for garden paths, walkways and low play equipment.
  • 23mm rubber grass mats – our most popular thickness for playgrounds and heavy-traffic areas, with greater impact absorption. Selected mats are fall height tested – see each product page for the certified critical fall height.

How to Install Rubber Grass Mats

  1. Cut the grass short and remove stones or debris.
  2. Lay the mats directly on the grass, ring side down, butting edges together.
  3. Join neighbouring mats with cable ties and secure with ground pegs.
  4. Leave the grass to grow through – typically 2–6 weeks depending on season.

Will grass grow through rubber grass mats?

Yes. The open-hole design lets light, water and air reach the grass, which grows through and anchors the mat.

Can rubber grass mats be laid on concrete?

They are designed for grass and soil. On concrete or tarmac, use solid rubber playground tiles instead.

How many rubber grass mats do I need?

Each 1m x 1.5m mat covers 1.5m². Divide your area in m² by 1.5 and round up. Call 01744 520 110 for bulk pricing.

Is delivery free?

Yes. Delivery is free on every order to UK addresses, and orders are dispatched within 24 hours. If you're outside the UK, email sales@expressmatting.co.uk for a shipping quote before you order.

Can you cut it to size?

Many of our rolls are sold by the metre and cut to the length you choose. See cut lengths under 10m, or call 01744 520 110 about other sizes.

How do I choose the right thickness?

Thicker rubber absorbs heavier impacts. For free weights and racks, most customers choose 16–18mm tiles or mats; for cardio areas and workshops, 3–10mm rolls are usually enough. See our thickness guide and calculator.
