Professional Installation Guide for Rubber Matting
Installing rubber matting correctly the first time saves time, money, and ensures optimal safety performance. As specialists in playground and gym flooring, we've identified the most common installation errors and how to avoid them completely.
1. Surface Preparation: The Foundation of Success
The most critical step is ensuring your subfloor is clean, dry, and level. Any debris, moisture, or unevenness will compromise the installation. Use a spirit level to check for variations greater than 3mm over 3 metres. Sweep and vacuum thoroughly, then allow concrete surfaces to cure for at least 28 days.
2. Acclimatisation Prevents Expansion Issues
Rubber matting must acclimatise to room temperature for 24-48 hours before installation. Store rolls upright in the installation area. This prevents expansion or contraction after fitting, which is a common cause of buckling or gaps.
3. Correct Adhesive Selection and Application
For permanent installations, use polyurethane-based adhesives specifically designed for rubber flooring. Apply with a notched trowel at the manufacturer's recommended coverage rate. Allow the adhesive to become tacky before laying the matting—this typically takes 20-30 minutes.
4. Interlocking Tiles: Start from the Corner
When installing interlocking rubber tiles, always begin from a corner and work outward. Ensure each tile clicks firmly into place with no gaps. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap tiles together if needed, never force them as this can damage the interlocking mechanism.
5. Edge Finishing for Professional Results
Proper edge finishing prevents trip hazards and extends the life of your matting. Use purpose-made edge ramps or trims that match your matting thickness. Secure edges with appropriate adhesive or mechanical fixings depending on the application.
6. Seam Placement Strategy
Plan seam locations away from high-traffic areas and doorways. For gym installations, avoid placing seams where heavy equipment will be positioned. Stagger seams in adjacent rows by at least 300mm for maximum stability.
7. Allow Proper Curing Time
If using adhesive, allow 24-72 hours curing time before permitting foot traffic, and up to 7 days before placing heavy equipment. Rushing this step is a common error that leads to displacement and adhesive failure.
8. Post-Installation Inspection
Walk the entire surface checking for any loose areas, gaps, or raised edges. Address any issues immediately while adhesive is still workable. Document the installation with photos for warranty purposes.
